OLD MAMMOTH ADU
Located in a forested neighborhood in Old Mammoth, this accessory dwelling unit (ADU) was designed as a compact yet highly functional addition to an existing property. The structure provides a studio living space on the ground floor with a light-filled art studio above, creating a flexible and creative retreat within a small footprint.
The project reflects a contemporary interpretation of mountain cabin architecture, carefully integrated into its wooded surroundings.

OUR ROLE
The client engaged Britton Architecture to design an ADU that would complement the existing log cabin on the property while establishing its own architectural identity. Although construction methods differ significantly, the new structure reflects the vertical proportions and material palette of the original home.
Clean lines, simple massing, and carefully selected finishes create continuity between the buildings while expressing a more modern interpretation of mountain design.
CHALLENGES + SOLUTIONS
Parcels in Old Mammoth are often compact, requiring efficient planning and thoughtful use of space. One of the primary challenges of this project was accommodating the client’s desired program — including both living quarters and a dedicated art studio — within a limited buildable area.
Local development guidelines and zoning requirements further shaped the design parameters. Through careful organization and vertical stacking of spaces, the design maximizes functionality while maintaining appropriate scale and proportion within the neighborhood context.
Tucked within a forested setting, the site offered limited direct solar exposure at ground level. As a result, particular attention was given to capturing natural light and views from the second-floor studio, where elevated positioning allows the space to feel open and connected to the surrounding treetops. Window placement and interior volume were carefully considered to enhance daylight while maintaining privacy within the wooded neighborhood.
As with all projects in the Eastern Sierra, durability and long-term performance in a high-altitude climate informed material selection and detailing.
The result is a modest yet carefully resolved structure that supports both everyday living and creative work, while remaining harmonious with its forested surroundings.
